Thus, they offer internships to high school students and undergraduates who are looking to gain experience in the exciting field of genomic research. They offer two types of internships, a summer student program and an academic year internship. Students in the summer student program participate in research under a mentor, designing their own project. Admission is competitive, for student receive a stipend of $5250 if selected for this 10-week program. The other option is an academic year internship. The number of slots available each year varies, but the student again completes research under a mentor. This internship provides no stipend and requires the student to be enrolled in a concurrent independent study program or student research program. As someone who participated in the academic year internship, I can attest to learning invaluable knowledge on laboratory techniques, scientific literature, and how the basic laboratory environment operates.
